America has a population of over 311 million folks. There are over 83 million cable TV subscribers, here.
Yet, major news network CNN is only averaging 389,000 viewers during prime time. Independent, Film News and Media reported "CNN continues to collapse. MSNBC dipped around 20% in total viewers and Fox News dipped 6%."
Fox News comes in first among the cable news channels in May, but even the perennial ratings leader was not immune to a decline this month. Compared to May 2011, FNC is down -6% in Total Viewers and -12% in the A25-54 demographic in Total Day. In primetime, the network is down -9% in Total Viewers and -23% in A25-54 viewers.
The ratings for May, 2012:
Primetime (Mon-Sun): 1.692M Total Viewers / 326,000 A25-54
Total Day (Mon-Sun): 1.011M Total Viewers / 248,000 A25-54

Like the other cable news networks MSNBC experienced declines in May — down double digits across the board.
The ratings for May, 2012: Primetime (Mon-Sun): 674,000 Total Viewers / 216,000 A25-54
Total Day (Mon-Sun): 385,000 Total Viewers / 124,000 A25-54

That hardly constitutes media power and influence, and is far more indicative of a media in decline. Cable TV news ratings used to surge during an election year but not anymore. Moreover, the cable TV news viewers are declining the most in the coveted 25-54 age group. These folks obviously do not have much use for cable TV news. As the older generation that religiously watched cable TV news dies off, they won't be replaced with younger views.
The media has a problem. It very well could be headed toward permanent extinction.
As an avid news junkie, I never watch TV news or even read the newspapers. MSNBC is gang of rabid totalitarian liberals bitching and moaning about Republicans while genuflecting before all things Obama. Fox is a rabid gang of statist neocon whackjobs perpetually bitching and moaning about Obama and all things Democrat. CNN, though the most politically neutral, is so pathetically boring that its value as a sleep inducing narcotic far exceeds its value as a viable purveyor of news.
